8th Fighter Wing commander retires after 22 years of service

KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  

After 22 years of honorable service in the United States Air Force, Col. Timothy Murphy, 8th Fighter Wing commander here, will be retiring effective Feb. 1, 2024. The decision to retire earlier than planned was a personal one made solely due to family reasons.

“I did not make this decision lightly, but know it is the best choice for the well-being of my family and the 8th Fighter Wing,” said Murphy. “I want to thank the Wolf Pack community for respecting our privacy and being so understanding as we transition to retirement.”

Col. Matthew C. Gaetke, currently the 607th Air Operations Center commander, has been announced as the new commander and an assumption of command ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 8, 2023.

“We are thankful for Colonel Murphy’s service and leadership, not only here in the Republic of Korea, but throughout his entire distinguished career,” said Lt. Gen. Scott Pleus, Seventh Air Force commander. “Tim has done an incredible job leading the 8th Fighter Wing’s Wolf Pack, and they are postured, ready, and responsive today because of that leadership.”

Col. Murphy took command of the 8th FW on May 25, 2023.
