Deep into the hours of the midnight shift, servicemembers venture from all corners of Osan Air Base to one key location, focused on a sole objective - obtaining one of Tech. Sgt. Kiev McCray's famous waffles.

McCray, 607thAir Operations Center non-commissioned officer in charge of personnel programs, began the tradition of 'Waffle Wednesday' in January, as a means of motivating the troops who spend long nights in the depths of the Osan Hardened Tactical Air Control Center.

"[McCray's waffles] are awesome," said Staff Sgt. Brian Crosby, 614th AOC space intelligence analyst. "They bring me a sense of home, although I am so far away."

McCray begins selling his waffles every Wednesday at 10 p.m. He continues sales, working at least three waffle irons at one time, until all supplies are exhausted.

"The smell is what draws people in," explained McCray, who makes approximately 100 waffles within a three hour period foe U.S. and Republic of Korea service members, alike.

Even when McCray doesn't set up shop, his reputation for excellence isn't forgotten.

"They always ask me if I'm making waffles tonight, even when my table isn't set up," said McCray.

Capt. Jennifer Hodges, 607th AOC chief of space plans, is a frequent fan of McCray's. "I eat his waffles every week," she said. "It is very nice that he makes the effort to do this for us ... He is always very cheerful while he serves us, too."

When asked why he makes the effort to carry on the tradition, McCray responded, "It's because of the joy people show. It feels good to make something that so many people enjoy."
