Tracey Murchison took command of the 607th Air Support Operations Group during a ceremony held at the Osan Officers Club June 9, relieving Col. James Johnson, who led the group since June 2012. Murchison was previously the Director of Plans, Programs and Analyses for 7th Air Force. The 607th ASOG provides air and space power expertise, command and control of close air support and counterfire as well as operationally tailored weather support for U.S. Forces Korea and Army ground and aviation units on the Korean peninsula. It also warehouses war reserve material for "turn-the-key" operations in the event of a hostile attack or emergency. The group is made up of the 604th Air Support Operations Squadron, the 607th Weather Squadron and the 607th Materiel Maintenance Squadron. In a speech that highlighted the group's work to integrate with US Army and Republic of Korea military units, Lt. Gen. Jan-Marc Jouas, 7th Air Force commander, emphasized that 607th ASOG Airmen are critical to the 7th Air Force mission to "Deter, Defend, and Defeat." "You represent some of the finest Airmen in the United States Air Force," he said. "I want to thank you for what you do, for making a difference each and every day and taking on the challenges and the making the sacrifices necessary to defend our alliance." "You have to be ready to fight tonight, and you have demonstrated time and time again that you are ready to do that. You are what Airpower is all about," he added. As Murchison stood before the formation of 607th ASOG members, he thanked his partners in the U.S. and ROK Armies and promised to his Airmen a commander who would live up to the highest standards while expecting the same from them. "It is a huge privilege and the honor of a lifetime to serve as your commander," he told them. "I want all of you to know that I will work very hard to live up to the enormous amount of trust that's been placed in me. I am committed to a unit with a healthy command climate, one with the characteristics of good order and discipline, teamwork, dignity and respect with an emphasis of safety both on and off duty while always, always being centered on our Air Force Core Values."
