Servicemembers from the U.S. and South Korea kicked off the 6th annual Exercise Key Resolve Feb. 24 that maintains the readiness of the Combined Forces Command staff and its components.

Key Resolve is an annual command post exercise that involves multiple services and more than 5,200 U.S. Forces working alongside nearly 10,000 Republic of Korea forces. Key Resolve ensures the ROK-U.S. Alliance is prepared to defend the ROK, while training Alliance forces to respond to any potential event on the peninsula.

More than 1,000 U.S. forces in addition to servicemembers from five other countries from off the peninsula are participating in the exercise. With units participating worldwide to include Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen throughout Korea, Pacific Command (PACOM), and at multiple locations across the U.S., KR 14 is one of the largest Joint Staff directed theater exercises in the world.

Key Resolve is executed under various scenarios with the purpose of defending the Korean Peninsula through the improvement of ROK-US combined force's operation capabilities, coordination, and execution of the deployment of US reinforcement forces, and maintaining ROK military's combat capabilities. Key Resolve is an annual ROK-US combined exercise that is not related with the current situations on the Korean Peninsula

Training exercises like Key Resolve are carried out in the spirit of the 1953 ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty. These exercises highlight the longstanding partnership and enduring friendship between United Nations Command sending state nations, help ensure peace and security on the Peninsula, and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the region.
