USAF, ROKAF test runway recovery operations

KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  Airmen from the 8th Fighter Wing participated in a combined civil engineer exercise here with Airmen and personnel from the Republic of Korea Air Forces' 38th Fighter Group, Oct. 21.

The combined exercise tested both unit's ability to provide support to contingecy air operations by conducting simulated wartime airfield runway repairs.

The 8th Civil Engineer Squadron conducted two runway crater repairs as part of base airfield recovery operations in order to meet U.S. and ROKAF contingency standards.

Following simulated runway damage, the Airman installed a temporary cover that enabled simulated contingency air operations.

ROKAF personnel and contractors exercised their war support contingency contracts by later removing the temporary cover and constructing a permanent one.

"This was a great opportunity to highlight both our partnership with ROKAF and our commitment to their defense," said Maj. Lynn Moriarty, 8th Civil Engineer Squadron operations commander. "It is also a first step for ROKAF in order to take the lead here at Kunsan with airfield recovery operations."

More than 40 USAF and ROKAF Airman participated in the exercise, along with nearly 28 Korean national contractors.
