SEOUL, South Korea - Republic of Korea President Park Geun-Hye (second row, center) meets with U.S., ROK and United Nations Sending States service members during a visit to CP TANGO Aug. 22. Gen. James Thurman, commander, United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea, briefed President Park on Ulchi Freedom Guardian, an annual computer-simulation command post exercise led by the ROK – US Combined Forces Command. UFG is designed to ensure readiness to defend the Republic of Korea and sustain the capabilities that strengthen the ROK-U.S. Alliance. Nearly 30,000 U.S. service members stationed in Korea, along with approximately 3,000 coming from off-peninsula, are participating in the exercise with military, civil and government personnel from the Republic of Korea, and personnel from the United Nations Command Sending States of Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom.
