Senior Airman Frank Santos, 51st Logistics Readiness Squadron mission generation vehicular equipment maintainer, plays a ukulele and sings “Kuanta Na Lagu” (“How Much Tears”) at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, May 16, 2022. Santos hails from Agat, Guam and has Chamorro ancestry. While the ukulele was popularized in the U.S. by Hawaiian influence its roots are in the Portuguese “braguinha” or “machete de braga”. In the 1850’s sugar plantations in Hawaii had become an economic power, which drew in immigrants to the islands to include people from Portugal who brought the braguinha.
