Breaking ground
185th Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard
Nov. 15, 2017 | 1:55
Construction crews were in the process of removing an asphalt parking lot this morning as local dignitaries officially broke ground for a new building at the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa.
Representatives from the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, the City of Sioux City and 185th Air Refueling Wing leadership officially broke ground for a new 37,000-square-foot consolidated support building at the Air National Guard unit in Sioux City.
Construction for the new building is expected to be completed by the end of next year. When complete the one-story building will house the unit’s clinic, food services and communications function, accommodating nearly 500 people.
The $12.4 million building project will replace aging facilities while consolidating several areas under one roof.
Lt. Colonel Kris Aldrich, 185th Air Refueling Wing Civil Engineer says the new building will be a more modern and energy efficient space designed specifically for the military functions who will use the building.
Aldrich said the new facility will replace two existing buildings which are scheduled for demolition.
Aldrich said the plans for the new building have been in the works for several years. He added that months of work have gone into soliciting bids and designing the new building. The new building was designed to meet the needs of the occupants while meeting the latest anti-terrorism and force protection standards.
